Collections and Galleries

  • Sergis Adamos’s collections are developed from a privately held archive of deteriorated early twentieth-century glass negative plates. Damaged by time, humidity, chemical change, and accidental fusion, these plates form the foundation of a contemporary archive-based practice that moves between digital works, giclée prints, canvas works with acrylic intervention, and installation.

Rather than restoring the original photographs, Adamos works with their altered condition. Cracks, stains, corrosion, fused surfaces, erased faces, and fragmented details become active visual material. Through scanning, enlargement, digital manipulation, isolation, recomposition, and physical intervention, the archive is transformed into distinct bodies of work.

This page brings together the main collections and galleries within the Metamorphosis project, from fused portraits and altered figures to extracted details, deteriorated surfaces, documentary views of the archive, and large-scale installation works. Together, they show how damaged photographic material can move from historical record into contemporary artistic language. The importance of Sergis' work is found in his skill to connect the past and present through these deteriorated and altered images. Through careful scanning and digital manipulation, Sergis crafts contemporary artworks that capture the essence of the original photographs while incorporating modern artistic elements. This blend of traditional and digital methods not only preserves historical artifacts, but also presents them in a manner that connects with contemporary audiences.

The mixed media digital art created by Sergis is significant as it provides a fresh outlook on historical documentation and artistic expression. The artwork showcases the allure of flaws and the fleeting nature of existence, turning what was once seen as broken or forgotten into something deeply significant and visually mesmerising. Through the transformation of these degraded images into the digital realm, Sergis establishes a captivating conversation between the past and the present, presenting a novel and inventive perspective on modern art that both provokes and motivates its audience.
